A Feature Of Habit

I spend a few minutes at the end of each day staging our home for the morning to follow. Removing obstacles, loading the dishwasher soap and coffee grounds into their respective devices (without, so far, making mistakes in which goes where), setting out the empty dog food bowls, scale and a spoon on the counter (we feed them by weight-50g/75g), locking the doors (including the dog door, given the previous intrusion of a raccoon), and relying on our home automation to manage the lights and temperature settings. It's all become a ritual that I follow at least 80 % of the time, if not more.

With or without the "SAD" light or alarm set to 6:30 AM, I am consistently up and active by 7. The dogs have their own biological rhythm going on. I enjoy their participation in the routine (most of the time). They see my efforts the night before and want me to succeed, at least in the food distribution phase. They disconnect after that, returning quickly to the warmth of their sleeping quarters before those reach room temperature in their absence. I, too, break left, taking my writing tablet, podcasts and Zoom access to the morning zazen. I write, reflect, get sunlight, and take a morning walk around the neighborhood or to Leigh to retrieve a changing Tesla from there before their 7 AM cutoff risks nasty reminder notes on the windshield, or worse, towing.

I have mentioned "Atomic Habits" here as an influence of significance. I used its inspiration to start making efforts to ensure I put time into physical and mental health and wellbeing. Meditation, movement, sunlight, and writing all come into play when I consistently practice as many of these habits and routines as possible.

I have also noted frequently how surprising it is to reflect on all that can occur on a given day. All the subtle passing experiences, from something as simple as playing with the dog to a life-changing insight or a rewarding time spent with friends.

All of this comes back to one of the most significant benefits of establishing routines: It helps me consider what I choose to focus on, set priorities, and reset my intentions. Daily. I get the most out of each day by staying conscious of and connected to what feels like the best investment of my time.
